SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: It is aimed to enable students to learn life-span development approach, main concepts, theories and fields of developmental psychology, research methods and developmental periods. Another main aim of the course is to encourage students to evaluate human development by considering interactions among physical, cognitive and socio-emotional developmental domains and the effects of preceding life periods on other periods of life. This first semester of the developmental psychology course, which is a two-semester course, examines physical, cognitive, socio-emotional, and moral development from conception to middle childhood.
Course Content: Life-span developmental approach, main approaches, theories and research methods of developmental psychology, biological foundations of development, prenatal development, physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development in infancy, early, middle and late childhood will be introduced. Interaction between genetics and environment, motor, cognitive, emotional and moral development, development of intelligence, language, identity and gender will be addressed. The effects of family, peers, school and culture on child development will be discussed.

  1) Explains main concepts and theoretical approaches of developmental psychology, periods and domains of development.
  2) Explains physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development in childhood.
  3) Explains biological foundations of development and effects of social environment on development.

  1) Adopts a life-span developmental approach in assessment of physical, psychological and social development in his/her academic and clinical work.
  2) Takes contextual characteristics into account in psychological assessments.
Competences (Described as "Ability of the learner to apply knowledge and skills autonomously with responsibility", "Learning to learn"," Communication and social" and "Field specific" competences.)
  1) Contributes to all the processes of group work, fulfills his/her responsibilities.
  2) Follows scientific research related to child development.
  3) Explains research methods and techniques used in the field of developmental psychology.
  4) Evaluates child development taking interaction between different domains of development and the relationship of childhood with other life periods into account.
  5) Adapts his/her academic and clinical work to physical, cognitive and socio-emotional needs of children.
  6) Communicates with children in ways that are appropriate for their cognitive and socio-emotional abilities in his/her psychological practice.
