SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: It is aimed to develop students' ability to evaluate the basic concepts and theories of social psychology, social cognition, social perception, attitude change, social impact, positive social behavior and aggression, social processes and technological infrastructure. In line with this objectives, the individual's attitudes and behaviors within the group and society, social identity, belonging to the group, inter-group relations and intercultural interactions will be studied.
Course Content: History of social psychology, basic approaches and theories of social psychology, research areas and methods will be introduced. Information about social cognition, social perception, self and identity, attitudes and attitude change, interpersonal attraction and cognitive dissonance will be given. Compliance and obedience, prejudice, positive social behavior and aggression will be introduced. The effects of group, social processes and culture on individual's attitudes and behaviors, inter-group and intercultural relationships will be discussed.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:

  1) Define the approaches and theories of social psychology, explain the main research areas and methods.
  2) Evaluates cognitive and psychological variables by establishing a relationship with social context.
  3) Explain intergroup and intragroup processes, social impact, attitudes and behaviors, and relationships between cognitive processes and social variables within the framework of social psychological theories.
Skills (Describe as Cognitive and/or Practical Skills.)
  1) Establishes a relationship between the individual's attitudes and behaviors and social processes, evaluates the individual's attitudes and behaviors by considering social variables.
  2) Students carry out their professional studies by giving importance to the role of social impact in the life of the individual and the effects of intra and intergroup processes on the cognitive, psychological and social development of the individual.
  3) Evaluate studies done in social psychology area critical way.
Competences (Described as "Ability of the learner to apply knowledge and skills autonomously with responsibility", "Learning to learn"," Communication and social" and "Field specific" competences.)
  1) Takes responsibility in all the studies done in the course and makes an effort to prepare the research paper effectively.
  2) Follows current research and publications in the field of social psychology.
  3) Evaluates psychological phenomena and social issues in the context of social psychological approaches in his / her professional studies.
  4) Develops awareness about the effects of social variables and cultural characteristics on the life of an individual and problems within and between groups.
