SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: It is aimed to enable students to learn the effects of culture on attitudes, behaviors, values and beliefs, universal and culture specific aspects of human behavior and cognitive processes, cross-cultural similarities and differences. Other aims of the course are to enable students to evaluate physical, psychological and social development from cultural psychological perspective, to enhance cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Course Content: Cultural psychology approaches, theories and research methods, cross-cultural studies, concepts such as individualism-collectivism and acculturation will be introduced. The relationship of culture with self, identity, personality, gender, cognitive processes and emotional development will be addressed. The effects of culture on parenting and family processes, social behavior and inter-group relations will be discussed.

  2) Explains the effects of culture on attitudes and behaviors, values and beliefs.
  3) Explains the effects of culture on relationships and interactions between social groups.

  1) Takes cultural characteristics and differences into account in his/her academic and clinical work.
  2) Evaluates psychological and social variables playing role in human behavior and cognitive processes from a cultural perspective.
Competences (Described as "Ability of the learner to apply knowledge and skills autonomously with responsibility", "Learning to learn"," Communication and social" and "Field specific" competences.)
  1) Fulfills his/her responsibilities in academic work.
  2) Follows cultural and cross-cultural studies examining the effects of culture and the relationship of culture with different psychological and social variables..
  3) Has knowledge about universal and culture specific characteristics of human behavior and cognitive processes.
  4) Has cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  5) Uses inter-cultural communication skills effectively.
