SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: This course aims to provide students basic knowledge about a variety of psychopathological symptoms manifested during childhood and adolescence. The mental disorders covered in the class will be presented based on DSM-5’s (American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition) most recent diagnostic criteria.
Course Content: We will discuss basic concepts pertaining to the particular mental disorders in the developmental context, diagnostic criteria for each disorder, the concept of differential diagnosis, prevalence of particular psychopathologies, and possible treatment options in detail and with case examples.

  1) Make a clinical distinction among developmental features and deviation from normality
  2) Recognize the signs and symptoms of developmental disorders and other forms of psychological and behavioral dysfunction.
  3) Identify and explain main criteria belonging to different mental disorders manifested throughout childhood and adolescence.
  4) Differentiate similar mental disorders based on clinical picture and differential diagnostic criteria
  5) Realize the causal factors associated with developmental disorders and treatment approaches in child and adolescent psychiatry clinics
