Seaway transport is the world's oldest transportation form, which dates back to the 3200s, and 84% of the world's transport volume, which has reached 14 billion tons today, is carried out by maritime transport. According to the data of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Turkey, approximately 310 million tons of foreign trade transport is carried out by seaway. The maritime sector is an industry that has been increasing every year due to the volume of trade, and its development and change is never-ending due to both technology and globalization. The maritime sector is structured in two main areas as “maritime trade ”and “marine tourism”.The priority needs of the maritime transport sector, which consists of several sub-branches and sectors, are trained personnel and qualified labor force.
For this purpose, it is our primary goal to bring the students who are educated in the marine and port management program in line with the needs of the sector in both maritime trade and marine tourism. Our students who prefer to work in maritime trade can work in ports, ship management companies, ship agencies, ship supply companies, brokers, marine insurance companies, line agencies and forwarding companies.
With the investments made in recent years, the number of marinas has reached to 63 and the yacht capacity has been 25.038. Students who wish to structure their career goals in marine tourism can work in marinas, yacht chartering and sales firms, insurance companies, yacht suppliers and other large area of marine tourism.
Our Maritime and Port Management program is designed to enable students to make an informed choice about their field of specialization. To achieve this, in addition to the basic management courses they take in the first year, students grasp the core principles of maritime affairs through courses such as "Maritime and Shipping Knowledge" and "Fundamental Principles of Maritime Trade." Later, through field-specific courses, they are able to decide which sub-sector of the industry they want to start their careers in. For this purpose, specialized courses such as "Maritime Tourism and Marina Management," "Port Management and Operations," "Ship and Fleet Management," "Ship Agency," and "Maritime Insurance Practices" aim to help students understand and focus on the areas they are most interested in.
The Maritime and Port Management Program, headed by Dr. Faculty Member Burak Çakaloz, has been conducting educational activities since the 2009-2010 academic year. Our program, which admits students with the YGS 6 score type, is structured into "Competency Courses," "Basic Field Courses," "Professional Field Expertise Courses," and "Workplace Applications." Of the 120 ECTS credits, 15% are basic field courses, 25.83% are competency courses, 40.83% are professional field expertise courses, and 18.33% are workplace application courses (internships).
