GENERAL INFORMATION

The growth of the international market and the possibility of operating in wide geographical areas in consequence of the liberalization of the markets have increased the importance of air transport. The aviation sector is an emerging sector with increasing capacity along with global technological advances and increasing number of passengers. Following the arrangements made between the years 2003-2018 in civil aviation, an average annual growth of around 5% has been seen in the aviation sector in the world, while this figure has been around 15% in Turkey. While employment in the aviation sector in our country was around 65 thousand in 2003, it has exceeded 196 thousand as of the end of 2018. In the last twelve years, the total number of turnovers in the sector has increased by 12 times from 2.2 billion dollars to 25 billion dollars.
If we look at the aircraft traffic, we can see that the number of domestic and international flights is 374 thousand in 2003 and the number of same flights has surpassed 1.500.000 in 2017.

Significant improvements in terms of passenger, cargo and flight traffic in the aviation industry have been recorded in recent years in Turkey. It is seen that the number of domestic and international passengers, expressed as 34 millions in 2003, reached 193 millions in 2018. The amount of Cargo carried in 2017 reached 1.260.000 tons.

The targets of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation for 2023 are as follows: increase the number of passenger aircrafts in Turkey, which is currently 515, to at least 750, amount of passengers reach to 350 million , open new airports, increase the points to be reached domestically and internationally, become a maintenance center for aircrafts in our region and make our own aircraft.

In the same vain, in addition to the 56 airports open to civil air traffic in Turkey, Istanbul Airport first phase finished and continues at a great pace; it will be one of the largest airports in the world with its 150 million annual passenger capacity. The first unit opened in service in 2018 and will be one of the most important transfer centers in the world that will serve both domestic and international passengers as well as transit passengers. It is estimated that this airport will create at least 100,000 new jobs in the aviation sector. Also, the newly opened Aeronautical Repair and Modification Center(ARMC) , which makes Turkey the most important aircraft maintenance center, will serve three continents and provide aircraft maintenance service to 11 aircrafts at the same time in Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.

THY is currently the leader in the aviation industry in terms of flying destinations and countries (124 countries and 318 destinations). Similarly, our other airlines reach more than 100 destinations in dozens of countries. Following the development of the airlines, TAV company, which renovates terminal buildings, became a world brand in terminal building and airport operation and it is currently operating 17 different airports in several countries. Also, ground services companies such as ÇELEBİ and HAVAŞ are expanding their services in 5 countries along with catering firms, such as DO&CO, which offer their services in many countries.

In sum, the aviation sector develops rapidly domestically and the companies that take place in the aviation sector have an international structure and operate in many important points of the world. In order to keep pace with these rapid developments, the numbers of private airline companies, fleet capacities and infrastructural facilities need to be increased. By the same token, it is necessary to provide qualified personnel at every stage of the activities to surmount every problem encountered in the industry.

Beykoz University Aviation Management degree program aims to provide qualified staff with the necessary skills that the industry requires. Program also aims to provide scientific and academic contribution to the aviation management field as well as to provide quality education contents and environment to the young people who want to take part in this field.
