SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of all components of marine transportation and to use the terminology of marine transportation system and functions correctly, to learn the ship types and shapes used in maritime transportation and to learn the general characteristics of maritime transportation, to internalize the basic principles of trade.
Course Content: This course; international trade concepts and approaches, international organizations affecting maritime transport, comparison of maritime transport with international trade types, maritime transport types, ship and cargo types, basic documents and documents used in maritime transport with incoterms.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:

  1) Recall the concept of international trade, international organizations and economic cooperations with their effects on maritime transport.
  2) Explain the importance of maritime transport with other transportation systems and its economic impact.
  3) Compares the condition of maritime transport in our country with international markets.
  4) Interprets the cargoes and properties which can carry according to the ship types.
  5) Compares the features of maritime transport mode and other transport modes.
  6) Recall the INCOTERMS which used by maritime transport.
  7) Knows the features and responsibilities of Flag State and Port State.
  8) Identify the types of maritime transport with their features.
  9) Recall the recent developments in world maritime market and list the trends affecting international maritime trade
  10) Distinguish the main documents which used in international maritime trade.

  1) Knows the practices of IMO and other trade organizations.
