SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: In this course, it is aimed that students will be able to methodologically design, manage and implement the process from idea to design in their own projects, synthesize existing applications in the field of communication design with their subjective approaches, and create original communication design projects.
Course Content: Students develop their communication design project in seven stages: idea, research, project writing, concept development, prototype, proof of concept, design. During this process-oriented course, topics such as the design process, design thinking, creative thinking, context, creating metaphors and reading help students develop their individual projects theoretically and practically.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:
Knowledge (Described as Theoritical and/or Factual Knowledge.)
  1) Defines the elements of design process.
  2) Explains the terminology of the field of Communication Design.
Skills (Describe as Cognitive and/or Practical Skills.)
  1) Designs and manages the design process, and implements it on his/her own project.
  2) Evaluates the theoretical and practical knowledge specific to the field of Communication Design.
  3) Synthesizes the existing approaches in the field of communication design with his/her authentic approaches.
Competences (Described as "Ability of the learner to apply knowledge and skills autonomously with responsibility", "Learning to learn"," Communication and social" and "Field specific" competences.)
  1) Manages his/her time according to the project requirements.
  2) Applies the universal ethical principles to his/her projects.

1) What is a communication design project?
2) Design process (idea, research, project writing, concept development, prototype, proof of concept, design)
3) Presentation of students' project ideas (Each student submits three project idea proposals in writing on a date to be determined before the 3rd week. Each student makes a 7-8-minute presentation covering the following items): Keywords, Project proposal/definition and objectives, Design area (Project's Communication Design area how it contributes), Authenticity and personal motivation. In addition: A portfolio link (behance.net) containing a selection of works done during 6 semesters is provided. Project ideas are pre-evaluated (contribution to evaluation: 10%)
4) Research and research methods for design
5) Second project submission (the selected idea from the three proposed project ideas is delivered on a date to be determined before the 5th week) (contribution to the evaluation: 10%). Draft project (title, essence, tool (medium), keywords, research summary, sources of inspiration and personal motivation)
6) Design thinking and creative thinking. General evaluation of projects.
7) Context and metaphors
8) Midterm week: 3rd presentation of the project and delivery of the project file (contribution to evaluation: 20%)
