SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: Students who take this course will be able to evaluate the main discussions in audience studies. At the end of the term, students are expected to identify the audience processes in transformation; compare the interaction between audiences and traditional, hybrid and cross media; analyse media content in relation to the ideological and cultural contexts.
Course Content: Media literacy and its importance in the world and Turkey media literacy process, communication process, elements and communication, mass media, communication and mass media relations, media functions, the economic dimension, television, television broadcasting in Turkey, the television program types, families, children and television (TV viewing habits), Negative effects of TV, TV program analysis, stimulating icons, Radio, functions, radio program types and analysis, Periods, functions, newspaper and magazine, basic concepts, importance of news and photography in the newspaper, newspaper preparation application, journal types Media, ethics and legislation

  1) Interprets the relationship between media and power in terms of audience research.

  1) Evaluates the relationship between media and audience by establishing a connection between power, ideology and hegemony.
  2) Applies the theories related to the audience researches and analyzes the problems encountered in the reception of media messages.
  3) Discusses the media text and the production and consumption processes of media texts with a critical perspective in the context of audience research.
