SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this lesson is to endow the students with knowledge of the international mechanisms of the financial sector, international financial institutions, how to read and interpret the balance of payments sheet and the international aspect of the dynamics of financial crises.
Course Content: This lesson seeks to add basic knowledge of the international aspect of the financial sector over students' basic knowledge of finance.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:
Knowledge (Described as Theoritical and/or Factual Knowledge.)
  1) Explains the basic mechanisms of international capital flows. Distinguishes between short-term and long-term capital flows.
  2) Explains the relation between the current and financial components of international economics.
  3) Knows the mechanisms of the market for foreign exchange in an economy. Explains the relation between the supply of and demand for foreign exchange and how the exchange rate forms through this relation.
  4) Understands and explains the role of Central Bank in foreign exchange market.
  5) Knows the financial history of world economy and the international conditions that brought about that history.
  6) Knows the history and function of the three major international economic institutions: IMF, World Bank and World Trade Organization. Knows in detail the role of IMF in world financial system.
  7) Knows the mechanism through which the world-wide financial crisis of 2008 happened. Knows the connection between financial and real sector that brought about the crisis. Knows and discusses the repercussions and future implications of the crisis.
Skills (Describe as Cognitive and/or Practical Skills.)
  1) Knows the components and sub-components of external Balance of Payments sheet. Displays basic calculation skills amonf the components. Can fill out o Balance of Payments sheet when only some of the components are given.

13) The difference between short-term and long-term capital flows. Distinguishing these in the Balance of Payments sheet. The relation between short-term flows and exchange and interest rates. Calculation of the Arbitrage rate. -
14) A critical analysis of the world financial crisis of 2008 (I): Build-up and bust -
15) A critical analysis of the world financial crisis of 2008 (II): Aftermath, repercussions and implications for developing countries, especially Turkey. -
