SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to help students interpret and evaluate contemporary art within the context of the 21st century by discussing prominent examples in class.
Course Content: This course explores the relationship (points of connection as well as the disconnections) between the 21st century and the 20th century arts; relates contemporary art to social, economical, and cultural turning points of the 21st century; and highlights the diversity within contemporary art as well as its common themes and concerns.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:

  1) Students relate 21st century art to 20th century art movements, and to noteworthy social, economical, and cultural developments occurring since the 20th century.
  2) Compare the differing roles attributed to arts and artists over centuries.
  3) Identify the diversity in 21st century art as well as the common points of concern for contemporary artists.
  4) Interpret and evaluate contemporary art in the 21st century.
