SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: This course aims to provide the required knowledge for evaluating the historical development of cinema in Turkey from the beginning till today, relating film history to economical, political and social conditions of the nation, and summarizing the cinematic accumulation of Turkish society.
Course Content: Cinematic activities in Turkey started shortly after the western countries which contributed to the emergence of this new technology and art. This is an era that corresponds to the collapsing period of Ottoman empire.
Although Turkey was not an important cinema country in the first few decades, film industry started to grow by the 1950s in terms of film and audience numbers as well as high quality works and Turkey became one of the top film producers in the world.
Adapting to the changing economic, technological and socio-political conditions in years, Turkish cinema has always exhibited idiosyncratic qualities where the cultural traits of her people and geography have been represented.
In the first few weeks the topics such as the introduction and pervasion of cinema in the Ottoman land and the first domestic feature and documentary films will be investigated. Then the Muhsin Ertuğrul period, the emergence of new filmmakers in the 1940s, and the 1950-60, 160-75, 1975-80, 1980-90, and post-1990 periods will be studied with regard to economic, technological and socio-political conditions of the country.
