SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: This course introduces basic phases of scientific research and different research
designs. It aims to teach how to formulate a scientific research question and
conduct literature review. The students are expected to learn sampling,
measurement and scaling techniques, and data collection and analysis. The last
aim of the course is equip students with the knowledge and abilities to prepare a
reseach report in accordance with the scientific ethical codes.
Course Content: This course covers research methods in social sciences. It first introduces
theoretical aspects of scientific research, phases of conducting a research and
different research designs. Then, the topics of sampling, measurement, scaling
and data collection techniques are discussed. It follows with different
quantitative and qualitative research designs and data analysis. Descriptive
analysis, hypothesis testing, regression, content analysis and case study will be
introduced. Scientific research ethics and writing a research report are the last
topics to be covered in this course.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:

  1) Students grasp the difference between scientific research and other knowledge forms.
  2) Students are able to interpret the research results and write a scientific report.
Skills (Describe as Cognitive and/or Practical Skills.)
  1) Students learn the whole research process starting from proposing a research question to data collection, data analysis and reporting.

  1) Students acquire the ability to conduct a scientific research from beginning to end on their own.
  2) Students acquire the skill to share and present the process and results of their own research project.
