SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to cover the fundamentals of computer networks including network protocols, local and wide area networks, client-server computing, wireless and mobile computing, data communications, data security and integrity and network management.
Course Content: Overview of computer Networks; network architecture and the ISO model; network topology, connectivity analysis, delay analysis and backbone analysis; physical layer, transmission and multiplexing, terminal handling, errors; data link layer and link protocols; network layer, routing and congestion, satellite and packet radio networks, local Networks; transmission and session layer, presentation layer, application layer.This course employs the project-based learning approach. In this respect aside from the conventional content the course has a project-based learning component. The project based-
learning component aims realising one or more projects designed for learning purposes involving the development of certain intermediary and final deliverables in a step-by-step mannerby the students individually or in project teams. The evaluation of the project-based learning component involves grading the project deliverables and the project works by the instructor and/or a jury.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:
Knowledge (Described as Theoritical and/or Factual Knowledge.)
  1) Understand fundamental concept of computer networks, network topologies, network architecture and its hardware components.
  2) Understand elements of a protocol in TCP/IP model and fundamentals of layering in computer networks.
  3) Know the roles of client and servers in computer networks for different applications.
  4) Know the fundamental concepts of data communication
  5) Understand the concept of network security and network management arising from a range of security threats (viruses, worms, Trojan horses and denial-of-service attacks), common barriers in network security and major issues in implementing proper security measures.
Skills (Describe as Cognitive and/or Practical Skills.)
  1) Understand fundamental concepts of LAN and WLAN technologies and topologies - understand of basic concepts of error detection and correction at the data link layer and below, implement a simple network protocol that operates in the physical and data link layers of the OSI model.
  2) Use various network related UNIX commands and tools for monitoring, decoding protocol data, and analyzing network traffic.
