SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: It aims to introduce the basic concepts of and the primary debates in sociology. The participants would recognize the ways, conditions and advantages of assessment of socialities from a sociological stand point.
Course Content: The basic theoretical approaches in sociology, sociological research methods, sociological thinking, sociological imagination, development of analytical approaches with conceptual tools of sociology in the context of basic sociological debates.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:

  1) The participants will learn to think with sociological concepts.
  2) The participants will recognize the paradigm based distinctiveness of different sociological theories and approaches
  3) The participants will be able to practice sociological approaches and the basic concepts on daily issues

  1) The participants will be able to link every day experiences and social facts with sociological imagination
  2) The participants will be able to collect data about social facts and socialities with qualitative and quantitative methods.

  1) The participants will be able to understand the relations of individual and society with sociological thinking
  2) The participants will learn the development phases of sociology and the approaches of prominent sociologist who had a considerable influence on this process

  4) The participants will be able to recognize social institutions and to analyze their functionality.
